Join musicologist Priscilla Pawlicki as she offers two new courses at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music that are sure to awaken the music lover in you. Chamber Music in Pasadena 2009-10 is a two-quarter course that explores the upcoming season of Pasadena's finest chamber music organizatons. Repertoire from Camerata Pacifica, Coleman Chamber Music, Ensemble Green, Pacific Serenades and Southwest Chamber Music will be discussed in class before the concerts with lectures, recordings and some live performance. Sharpen your listening skills, acquaint yourself with a remarkably varied body of works and enhance your concert-going experiences in a course designed for the general listener and musician alike. The class meets every Wednesday from 7 to 9:15 pm beginning September 23.
Twentieth-Century Masters: Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Bartók and Shostakovich, Tuesday from 10:00 am to 12:15 pm, explores the classics of contemporary music. As composers sought new modes of expression in a changing world after 1900, musical styles became richer and more complex than at any other time in Western music. Schoenberg's emancipation of dissonance and his development of the 12-tone system brought about a dramatic schism with the music of the past. Stravinsky's early ballets exploited rhythm in a new way - free from the tyranny of the barline as he described the Rite of Spring, his famous early work that provoked a riot at its premiere in 1913. Bartók colored his unique style with the distinctive rhythms and melodic phrases of Eastern European folk music, while Shostakovich, in his extraordinary cycles of string quartets and symphonies, chronicled his experiences in contemporary Soviet society, declaring that ...art registers its firm protest against evil and oppression. Internationally acclaimed, Los Angeles-born ceramist Dora De Lariosand#39s unique pan-cultural vision has been inspired by the interplay of cultures in her Mexican/Japanese neighborhood, study of world religions, and ancient art. An artist that exalts the feminine form and has a deep reverence for the mystical aspects of life, De Lariosand#39s works are both earthly and divine. Curated by preeminent ceramics scholar Elaine Levin, this exhibit explores the extraordinary range of De Lariosand#39s work - from mythological figurines and goddess sculptures, to life-size totems and murals. Her soulfully rendered pieces, glazed with rich color, pay homage to a lifelong love affair with world cultures and attest to the artistand#39s humor and exotic imagination. Experience the dreams of Dora De Larios at CAFAM.

Learn about the power of graphic design to communicate ideas and shape human behavior in this original and thought-provoking exhibition rooted in California history. Juxtaposing idyllic images created for selling citrus fruits against union posters created to mobilize for workersand#39 rights, this exhibition explores the ways in which design principles were used to influence the American consumer. Early 20th century California fruit box labels painted a mythical picture of a sun-soaked state with pristine orchards, luxurious fruit, and glamorous women. Yet not depicted on the labels were the field laborers who often worked under harsh conditions and with few rights. Seen side-by-side, California fruit box labels from 1887-1959 and United Farm Workers (UFW) posters from 1965-1998 demonstrate the power of graphic design and offer an eye-opening look at California history. Bill Stern, guest curator, organized this exhibition for the Museum of California Design.

The University Art Gallery continues its Major Works of Art Series with Argentine artist Roberto Jacobyand#39s ''1968: el culo te abrocho,'' which combines Jacobyand#39s political art experiments at the Instituto Di Tella in Buenos Aires during the '60s with his stint as the lyricist for the famous Argentine new wave band Virus in the '80s. Political posters from Jacobyand#39s archive have been reprinted with super imposed, boldly colored snippets of Virus lyrics. Together, they provide a commentary on the utopian, poetic hopes that characterized the global cultural revolution of the 1960s. Jacobyand#39s artwork from the mid 1960s defined a branch of ''new media'' conceptual art a full decade before such aesthetic experiments were made in the Northern Hemisphere.

The work of one of California's preeminent painters, Wayne Thiebaud (b. 1920) is brought to life in a new retrospective, Wayne Thiebaud: 70 Years of Painting, on view at the Pasadena Museum of California Art from October 4, 2009 – January 31, 2010. Included in the exhibition are many of the self-taught artist's sketches, drawings, and studies, revealing his immense skill at drafting, as well as his abiding interest in master painters such as Manet and Velasquez. Although Thiebaud's celebrated Pop paintings deviate from pure Realism through the addition of his distinctive touches of abstracted color and light, the drawings confirm that at the heart of these paintings, his careful observation of the physical world remains.

The Andrew Weiss Gallery is proud to present the opening of an unprecedented exhibition, ''PICASSO CERAMICS (1947-1969)'' October 9 - December 12, 2009. More than 50 rare ceramic works will be made available to collectors for the first time, returning from a ten year museum tour nationwide.
This exhibition represents one of the largest and comprehensive collections of Picasso ceramics to be offered by a private gallery. The collection spans over 20 years of ceramic works, from his first platters in 1947 to his last engraved plaques in 1969.

The exhibition which includes drawings, etchings and lithographs exemplifies Picasso's passion and life-long pursuit to explore and master all mediums. In addition, the exhibition will include important works by other 20th century masters, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Marc Chagall, and Henri Matisse.

The origin for all human tools is found at the outer limits of our evolved biology – the length of our arms, the coefficient of propulsion available through our leg muscles, or the focus and rotational range of our eyes. For millennia, tools have transcended these and other biological limits to play a role in human physical and cultural evolution. TOOLS will explore this theme by mixing art with artivacts from natural history and science. TOOLS is co-curated by Stephen Nowlin and John O'Brien.
Short: Tools explores how humans extend the limits of their biology, and includes art as well as artifacts from natural history and science – from ancient stone tools to contemporary sculpture to Mars rovers.
''Tools and Creativity,'' a class from Art Center's Integrated Studies Department will use a portion of the gallery as its studio throughout the exhibit. Class projects will be on display as they are developed.
TOOLS is a part of ORIGINS: ArtandIdeas 2009, the fifth in a series of theme-based collaborations among Pasadena arts and sciences organizations, taking place October 22-November 9.

A Noise Within (ANW), the critically acclaimed classical repertory theatre
company, presents a new adaptation of FYODOR DOSTOYEVSKY's towering
masterpiece CRIME AND PUNISHMENT created by Marilyn Campbell and Curt
Columbus, which opens Saturday, October 17 and closes Thursday, December 17,
2009 (previews begin Saturday, October 10). Craig Belknap directs this
thrilling chamber piece, which transforms the 600-page opus into a
theatrical work that loses none of this quintessential crime story's
edge-of-your-seat quality. In a feat that rivals the construction of the
Hoover Dam, Crime and Punishment, has been distilled into a taut 90-minute
play. [that] will banish any bad memories you might have of trying to
struggle through Dostoevsky's book. (New York Times). The New York Times
also hailed it as remarkably absorbing, and the Chicago Sun Times called
it stunningly lean, taut, and emotionally searing.
The tension-filled psychological thriller, undertaken in a breathless 90
minutes by three actors - Robertson Dean (Inspector/Others), Holly Hawkins
(Sonya/Others) and Michael A. Newcomer (Raskolnikov) - explores the
exquisite fragility of the mind. In a desperate quest to be redeemed for
the perpetration of an unspeakable crime, brilliant Raskolnikov embodies
humankind's eternal struggle between enlightened genius and the temptation
of evil. Belknap's use of period music and eerie cinematic-type effects in
the production enhance the tension and drama.

Fashioning Domesticity, Weaving Desire: Visions of the Filipina exhibition explores the canonical visions of the early to mid 20th-century Filipina as civilized and/or wild. Through the juxtaposition of traditional textiles and ethnographic photography, as well as objects of personal adornment and popular print culture, this exhibition addresses the fashioning of domesticity and the weaving of desire as political strategies of polarization. Interrogating the body as a (dis)embodied landscape activated by the braided contexts of colonialism and democracy, the exhibition acknowledges that central to this binary of conquest and governance is the co-existence, reflection, and collision of the modern and primitive.

Santa Monica, CA –18th Street presents its final exhibition of 2009 entitled Without A Car In The World (100 Car-less Angelinos Tell Stories of Living in Los Angeles). This exhibition features 100 photographs by artist Diane Meyer with accompanying narratives from persons who live without a car in Los Angeles. The event begins Saturday, October 17, at the 18th Street Arts Center with an opening reception from 6:00 PM-9:00 PM.
The exhibition addresses how car culture has shaped psychological, spatial and geographic perceptions of Los Angeles. The subjects of Ms. Meyer's photographs have given up their cars for a variety of reasons ranging from ideological, financial or health-related issues. By bringing together these various voices through the images and text, the exhibition will ultimately acknowledge transportation alternatives. It will also provide a voice to a group of individuals often perceived to be disenfranchised in some way for not having an automobile.
Gallery hours are Monday – Friday 11am-6pm. 18th Street Arts Center is located at 1639 18th Street, Santa Monica. For further information and images please visit our pressroom/gallery at http://18thstreet.org/pressroom.html

This exhibition examines the legacy of Indias divine heroes and heroines in contemporary South Asian culture through the comic book genre. Indian superheroes and their arch enemies are visualized from ancient archetypes that have long been depicted in traditional painting and sculpture, and are deeply ingrained in Indias historical imagination. In the twentyfirst century new incarnations of ancient Indian gods nd goddesses are made manifest as modern uperheroes brought to Earth to vanquish the evil forces. Demons take the form of modern villains, and raise havoc in todays troubled times. Today comic book production takes place in a global cultural context and within a multi-media framework that combines traditional hand-drawn illustrations with computer design and animation technology. These issues are explored through a selection of vintageIndian and American comics, and contemporary pencil and ink drawn character explorations by Indian artists from the Liquid Comics series Ramayan and Devi. To illustrate the continuity of the heroic narrative tradition in Indian art, a selection from LACMAs historical collection of Indian paintings will also be on view. These include folios from Mughal illustrated manuscripts, paintings and drawings from the northern Indian princely states, and story-telling paintings from central India.

Joe Day/Deegan Day Design's Blow x Blow embodies two ideas in exhibition: the claiming of gallery space by architects and the ceding of that space to the ambient possibilities of new media. To chart this collision, techniques of cinematic projection and scripting are repurposed to spur new orders of spatial and structural sequencing, and new environments for communing with new art.
The choreography of freedom and constraint in the design of Blow x Blow also keys to its inaugural programming, PRI/MUS: Architectures for Art and Crime, a study of prisons, museums and their complementary roles in contemporary high design and US urban renewal. The architects hope to test the duration of the exhibition with a two week-run of PRI/MUS, then the installation will host work by leading artists working in new media.

A special art exhibiton featuring Harold Oandrsquo;Connor (metal art) and Polly Barton (silk weaving) The genesis of all civilization is marked by the birth of a common literature and common styles of arts, crafts, music, and religion. These elements define a society and give it its identity. The Shumei Arts Council will explore modern examples of crafts basic to all civilizations, emphasizing cross-cultural influence. This art exhibition is a part of the Art and Ideas 2009: Origins from October 23, 2009 to November 9, 2009. (Please see www.artideasfestival.org) Harold Oandrsquo;Connor?s creative life is dominated by the coupling of ancient techniques and contemporary aesthetics. His designs originate from primal relationships between earth, fire, and sky. Some of the techniques he employs are among the oldest invented by man, including granulation, examples of which are found at the site of Ur, Iraq, dated from about 2,440 B.C. Many pf his creations manifest a Zen quality and a sense of wabi-sabi, one of the aesthetic values of Japanese culture. Polly Barton undertook intensive studying of kimono silk weaving in Japan for six months in the early 1980s. She currently resides in Santa Fe, NM, pursuing silk weaving with the finely detailed techniques of kasuri, which employs fibers dyed to create splashes patterns. Under the immense sky of the Southwest, the ancient legend of the cosmic Spider Womanandrsquo;s weaving of all creation is almost visible, reminding us of our origins.

This exhibition of close to 150 paintings, sculpture and photographs from the Norton Simon collections traces artistic engagements with portraiture following Ingres's influence in the early to mid-19th century through to the present day, and examines why this genre, so seemingly laden with restrictions and expectations, appealed to some of the greatest avant-garde painters in the history of art. The exhibition includes such artists as Gustave Courbet, Edgar Degas, Vincent van Gogh, Amedeo Modigliani, Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol, among many others.
