Repertoire from Camerata Pacifica, Coleman Chamber Music, Ensemble Green, Pacific Serenades and Southwest Chamber Music will be discussed in class before the concerts with lectures, recordings and some live performance. Sharpen your listening skills, acquaint yourself with a remarkably varied body of works and enhance your concert-going experiences in a course designed for the general listener and musician alike. The class meets every Wednesday from 7 to 9:15 pm beginning September 23. Twentieth-Century Masters: Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Bartók and Shostakovich, Tuesday from 10:00 am to 12:15 pm, explores the classics of contemporary music. As composers sought new modes of expression in a changing world after 1900, musical styles became richer and more complex than at any other time in Western music. Schoenberg's emancipation of dissonance and his development of the 12-tone system brought about a dramatic schism with the music of the past. Stravinsky's early ballets exploited rhythm in a new way - free from the tyranny of the barline as he described the Rite of Spring, his famous early work that provoked a riot at its premiere in 1913. Bartók colored his unique style with the distinctive rhythms and melodic phrases of Eastern European folk music, while Shostakovich, in his extraordinary cycles of string quartets and symphonies, chronicled his experiences in contemporary Soviet society, declaring that ...art registers its firm protest against evil and oppression. At a time when contemporary culture is dominated by the mass media and we are all glued to many screens, it is fascinating to contemplate the career of little-known Austrian sociologist, Otto Neurath (18881945), a polymath whose intellectual and moral compass forged in the embers of World War I led him to predict the dramatic growth of the knowledge economy and to develop tools for a universal pictorial language. Ever in the interest of advancing participatory forms of democratic exchange, Neurath was by turn an academic, economic minister, housing administrator, museum director and philosopher of science. He collaborated with the leading planners, designers and artists of his time, among them Adolf Loos, Josef Frank, Le Corbusier, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and key New Deal intellectuals and his work had a profound influence on a range of disciplines, including architecture, philosophy, economics, urbanism and graphic design. With Otto Neurath. Gypsy Urbanism, the MAK Center for Art and Architecture presents the absorbing work of this passionate intellectual in an exhibition guest curated by architectural critic and theorist, Nader Vossoughian. This exhibition is on view at the Schindler House from November 4, 2009 through January 31, 2010.

650A South Avenue 21 Los Angeles 90031
LA Artcore presents a three-artist exhibition featuring the latest work of painters Jeffrey Nemeroff, Phil Jong Kho and Gye Yung Jung. Jeffrey Nemeroff is a Los Angeles native, whose interest in art began at an early age. Pursuing his passion, he obtained a B.A. degree in Art and Design, which developed into a prestigious career of twenty-two years, as art director of Architectural Digest. Nemeroff is now able to devote himself full-time to his studio work and in this latest series of abstract paintings, Nemeroff uses thread and yarn as his drawing implements; creating provocative forms as he drapes the material over an acrylic ground. Multiple layers of oil glazes are applied as images slowly emerge, creating tension and movement between the foreground and background. These abstract forms, dictated in part by chance, also, reference natural or biological states, within a context that can be seen as representing either internal or external realms. Korean-born artist Phil Jong Kho is a professor of art at the University of Suwon, in Seoul, Korea and will exhibit his newest series Sound of Nature at the LA Artcore Brewery Annex. His work stems from both his knowledge of contemporary painting, and traditional Asian painting techniques. These two philosophies are gracefully intertwined as he explores organic and abstract forms to express the harmony and rhythmic beauty he finds in nature.

Renowned Culver City Photographer, David Jordan Williams showcases his photo art show entitled The Ballona Wetlands in 18th Streets project room. His photographic art offers just a taste of some of the most stunning and revealing images of this special, and somewhat hidden, place along the Los Angeles coast, known as the Ballona Wetlands. Williams photography debuts as a month-long show in November that highlights features from the book, Celebrate Ballona, written and compiled by Susan Suntree, Marcia Hancom and Robert Roy van de Hoek. The book will be available as part of a multiple year celebration of the amazing citizen initiative of preserving more than 600 acres of land in the Ballona Valley. The Ballona Wetlands photo art exhibit is sponsored by the Ballona Institute and is a project of the International Humanities Center in Pacific Palisades.

A Noise Within (ANW) pokes a bit of fun at its own name with some theatrical humor when it stages the joyfully out-of control British farce NOISES OFF by MICHAEL FRAYN, opening Saturday, November 14 and closing Sunday, December 20, 2009 (previews begin November 7). Company Co-Founders/Co-Artistic Directors Geoff Elliott and Julia Rodriguez-Elliott co-direct the production, in which Elliott also performs. Chuckling at the similarity between the names of the theatre company and the play, Elliott notes, Almost since A Noise Withins inception, the public has confused our name with Noises Off. Its about time we really wreak havoc by finally producing the show! In Frayns farce, chaos reigns both onstage and off as an under-rehearsed and over-worked troupe of veteran thespians ready themselves for the world premiere of a new play. With a penchant for drama more personal than professional, the bumbling actors stumble through rehearsals and performances, and in the process bring the house down, quite literally. The cast features Shaun Anthony (Tim Allgood), Apollo Dukakis (Selsdon Mowbray), Geoff Elliott (Lloyd Dallas), Jill Hill (Brenda Blair), Mikael Salazar (Garry Lejeune), Lenne Klingaman (Poppy Norton-Taylor), Emily Kosloski (Brooke Ashton), Stephen Rockwell (Frederick Fellowes) and Deborah Strang (Dotty Otley).
