Hidden Gem Neighborhoods: Los Feliz
Los Feliz, now a thriving Los Angeles neighborhood, sits just east of Hollywood and has become, like its neighbor Silver Lake, one of those places where people just want to be. And its growing collection of hip stores and restaurants is typically within walking distance, making it even more appealing for out-of-town visitors.

If you had to pick a main drag, it’d most likely be Vermont Avenue, whose vibe is reminiscent of the East Village – communal, friendly and self-contained. Not surprisingly, it’s where LA’s creative folk have been flocking. Writers, actors, musicians and, invariably, hipsters are calling Los Feliz home. Here are some reasons why.

Fred 62 (Food)
Nothing quite represents Los Feliz like Fred 62, a 24-hour coffee shop opened by Chef Fred Eric. Retro, hip and hilariously kitschy, the restaurant features a 1950s interior with all the accoutrements. Along with the car-culture décor, expect a playful menu, the highlights of which include the “Bearded Mr. Frenchy” (four pieces of French toast with corn flakes) and the “Tower of Power” (smoked turkey club). All this undoubtedly brings in a mixed crowd, but you’re sure to find indie kids and trendy hipsters battling for seats. Like we said, that’s Los Feliz.

Vista Theatre (Entertainment)
Vista, which recently turned 80, is one of LA’s most classic theaters, and it’s by far a local favorite. Inside, charming chandeliers and a red-and-gold motif convey a more picture-house feel than movie theater, but don’t be fooled by the vintage décor. The entire theater has been remodeled along with its sound system, which now has enough oomph to rattle the building. Because there’s only one screen, prices are cheaper, which means more money for popcorn and drinks. All in all, it’s a unique way to experience a movie, and one that you can talk about as a highlight of an LA trip.

Skylight Books (Shopping)
Skylight is pretty much the quintessential neighborhood bookstore. There’s the mandatory indie section, complete with McSweeney’s issues, and you’re apt to find book editions that the chain stores just don’t carry. A dedicated Los Feliz crowd frequents the bookstore, adding to the artsy vibe, and a friendly staff plays its part in keeping folks around with superb recommendations and tons of literary information.

The Dresden Room (Drinks)
It’s always been a popular spot with locals, but The Dresden Room exploded onto the tourist scene after its prominent appearance in the movie Swingers. Since then, wannabe Vince Vaughns head to this watering hole to check out what the action is all about. Marty and Elayne continue to provide the music, and the bartenders continue to concoct cocktails on par with with the best of them. Don’t be surprised if you hear patrons quoting lines from the movie (“You’ve got claws!”).

Barnsdall Art Park (Recreation)
Architecture lovers won’t want to miss this art park, which hosts Frank Lloyd Wright’s renowned Hollyhock House. After checking out the structure, enjoy the views. Barnsdall sits atop a large hill overlooking the city, and it’s possibly one of the best places to picnic in Los Angeles. During the summers, this is the site for Shakespeare in the Park.
