Angels Flight

The LA landmark dubbed "the shortest railway in the world" re-opened in March 2010 after a nine-year hiatus. Located on the corner of 4th and Hill streets, Angels Flight’s $3.5 million restoration included a new drive system and safety improvements. The original cars, Olivet and Sinai, are running on Bunker Hill and transport Angelenos and visitors between the historic Downtown core along Hill Street and the offices and condos on Bunker Hill for just 25 cents. Angels Flight closed briefly again in June-July 2011 so that eight custom wheels could be installed on both cars.

LA Public Library, Herald-Examiner Collection, 1968"Originally built by engineer and Civil War veteran Colonel J.W. Eddy in 1901, the privately-operated little funicular connected the residential community at the top of Bunker Hill with the commercial and civic center district below, generally between Hill and Main Streets. In 1969, in connection with the Bunker Hill Urban Renewal Project, the City of Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), dismantled the Railway and placed its parts in storage. Finally, 27 years later, the CRA completed its rebuilding of Angels Flight. When the funicular reopened in 1996, it was returned to the private sector and now is under the stewardship of the nonprofit Angels Flight Railway Foundation." -- www.angelsflight.com
