Celebrated across the United States and regionally in Mexico, Cinco de Mayo began as a commemoration of Mexico’s victory over a much larger, better-equipped French army at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Now in its 150th year, Cinco de Mayo has grown to a nationwide celebration of Mexican culture and pride.
