Fall Fashion Trends 2009
As fall fashion lands in Los Angeles, the sagging economy is still top of mind. Fall fashion shows everywhere from LA to New York were certainly aware of it, and designers all provided their responses to an uncertain fall economy — but they went about it in different ways. Two major takes on fall fashion were clear: 1) rebel against the struggling economy or 2) turn to what you know. Here are some of our favorite fall fashion trends for 2009.

Call it denial or call it free spirited, a major statement this fall is that despite the economy, people are still going to look good. And if that means turning heads to let everyone know that you’re not going to let some recession have a say on your personal style, so be it.

Biker Attitude

What says “don’t give a damn” more than the tough and sexy biker jacket? Designers such as Alexander Wang and Roland Mouret deliver sleek renditions for this must-have look for fall 2009. Don't worry about overdoing it, because leather leggings are also getting attention this fall.

Where to Get It: BCBG at Hollywood & Highland Center (biker jacket); Kitson at Americana at Brand (leather leggings).

Atlas Shrugged

If you always said the 80s look would come back, pat yourself on the back. A major look this fall features power shoulders to bust through economic and fashion woes alike. You’ll see broad, strong shoulders appearing this fall, particularly with evening wear fashion.

Velvet Richness

That’s right, velvet. If we can’t be rich, we might as well feel rich. Don’t mistake this for Renaissance-stuffed drapery. The trend instead is geared toward short, chic dresses. The message: luxurious in texture and soft to touch. Diane von Furstenberg and Prada both unveiled the look for fall 2009. Look for it in Prada's Rodeo Drive location.

When times get rocky, the tried-and-true are best bets for security and comfort, which is why a number of designers went this route with fall lines in 2009. How so? Double-breasted jackets, tweed, camel hair and pinstripes are all updated classics this season.

Tough Love

Camel hair is tough stuff but can be surprisingly soft — exactly what we all need to handle an uncertain economy. Good thing it looks beautiful, too. Ever since Michelle Obama sported the camel coat, it’s been everywhere and in full swing. And it's not just for coats. J.Crew sports a super-soft V-neck cardigan for the budget conscious.

Where to Get It: J. Crew at Americana at Brand

No Long Faces, Just Long Jackets

Long boyfriend jackets are back this season, perfect for a down-to-earth, comfy look. This isn’t to say it’s couchware — sophistication is key to pulling it off.

Where to Get it: Nordstrom at The Grove.

Confidence Boost

Bonuses and raises aren’t all that common during a recession, but that doesn’t mean your confidence needs to sag. The answer: pin stripes. Bold, powerful and chic, the look has a “get down to business” attitude that will set you up for success when the economy turns around. Get it at J.Crew at The Grove.

Plaid Comfort
In times of sorrow, it's natural to want to get comforted, and we're glad we can always fall back on plaid. It's in this fall, but be careful pairing it with accessories. There's a fine line between trendy and tacky, especially with these patterns. Go the safe route and pair it with dark denim. Get it at Macy's Plaza in Downtown LA.

Recession or no recession, beauty trends are always going to be around. This fall, find out how to embrace fall's rich color with these tips.

Makeover Your Makeup
Summer was about the ethereal look. Fall is now about rich color. Set aside your lighter shades for darker, more lush hues of plums and charcoal greys. Don’t forget the drama. Make the eyes smokier, the lashes longer and the lips bolder.

Where to Get it: Sephora at the Beverly Center.

Let Your Hair Down
The recession is no reason to get uptight. Shorter hair was cute and practical for the summer but fall is all about longer tresses. This will give you more options to play with your look. Also, go big on the volume.
