Powell and Pressburger’s magical charm once again captivates the world of cinema in their fantastical creation A Matter of Life and Death. The film stars David Niven as a Royal Air Force pilot finding himself on the verge of death while forming a spiritual connection with an American radio operator, June (Kim Hunter), in its intense, yet fascinating opening sequence. Employing metaphorical thematic vessels such as religion and salvation, the film perceives life and death as an interrelated pair of forces rather than two separate entities and believes in the epic escalator as a means of transportation between the two realms.
