The Greek Theatre is the place to be for the week of October 14. PJ Harvey kicks off a string of high-profile concerts at Griffith Park’s amphitheater with her sold out show on Monday night and Remi Wolf takes to the Greek’s stage on Wednesday, October 16, for her own sold-out, headlining show. Meanwhile, there are still tickets available to see Tinashe at the same venue the following night.

Elsewhere this week, The Black Angels play three nights at the Lodge Room, one of which has already sold out. Seminal emo band Sunny Day Real Estate plays two nights at Belasco. Tickets still remain for the Saturday, October 19 show.

For a local’s view of LA nightlife this week, consider the School House Rocks fundraiser concert at Bob Baker Marionette Theater on Tuesday night, Belle Book & Candle’s monthly burlesque party at El Cid on Wednesday or The Rocksteady Lounge’s vinyl-centric affair at Akbar on Thursday. This weekend, LA punk supergroup Suburban John plays Cretin Hop at The Virgil on Friday, queer perreo party Preciosa throws their Halloween bash at Don Quixote on Saturday and The Mastersons lead a salute to Southern California country and roots music at Zebulon on Sunday night. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Shintaro Sakamoto was known as the vocalist and guitarist for the Japanese psychedelic band Yura Yura Teikoku. Since the band’s 2010 split, Sakamoto has gone on to make four solo albums full of groovy indie pop, the most recent of which, Like a Fable, was released in 2022. Check him out at The Wiltern on Monday, October 14, with an opening set from the classic soul-influenced Finnish artist Bobby Oroza. Tickets at Live Nation.

In mid-September, Charli XCX and Troye Sivan launched their much-hyped Sweat tour and, one month into the North American jaunt, they’ll touch down in Los Angeles for a two-night stint at Kia Forum. At last check, there were very few tickets left for both the Tuesday, October 15 and Wednesday, October 16 shows. Be sure to get to the show early, you won’t want to miss Shygirl’s opening set. Performance Art Museum: 21 & Over - Catch One (Oct. 15)



A mix of local and international performers will take over historic disco Catch One on the last three Tuesdays of October for Performance Art Museum’s 21 & Over. The series kicks off on October 15 with a night hosted by Page Person and featuring performances from Mariel Carranza, keyon gaskin, Sebastian Hernandez and others. Tickets are available at Dice for individual nights of the series, but you can also buy a three-night pass if you plan to attend on October 22 and 29 as well.

Folk Bitch Trio - Genghis Cohen (Oct. 15)



Australia’s Folk Bitch Trio show off their harmonizing skills on the recently released single, “God’s a Different Sword.” The up-and-comers, who have been playing alongside M. Ward in Texas and portions of the South, headline Genghis Cohen on Tuesday, October 15 for an all-ages show with support from Alex Amen. Tickets at Dice.

Duffy X Uhlmann - Bob Baker Marionette Theater (Oct. 15)



Guitarists Meg Duffy and Gregg Uhlmann, both of whom have played with Perfume Genius, released their collaborative, instrumental album Doubles last year and are currently touring the Western U.S. For their hometown gig, the musicians will play as part of Bob Baker Marionette Theater’s School House Rocks series, which brings together live music and puppets to raise funds to provide field trips for local kids.

Metal icons Judas Priest, who released their latest album, Invincible Shield, back in March, bring their fall tour to YouTube Theater on Tuesday, October 15 with support from Swedish power metal greats Sabaton. Tickets are on sale at Ticketmaster and going fast, so don’t snooze on getting yours.

On Like All Before You, the recently-released third album from The Voidz, Julian Casablancas and bandmates flirt with everything from synthwave to heavy metal. Catch the band live on Wednesday, October 16, at Downtown LA’s Orpheum Theatre with an opening set from Canadian band Crack Cloud, whose latest album, Red Album, came out last summer. "Witch Blood" is the theme for this month’s edition of Belle, Book & Candle, the series of occult burlesque shows from Pleasant Gehman and Shana Leilani. Performing at El Cid on Wednesday, October 16, are Devilla, Lena Fumi, Battyna Sin, Ruby Champagne, Princess Farhana and Jewelz Endarkened. After finishing their European tour with Dandy Warhols, Austin psych rockers The Black Angels begin their trek across the western U.S. with three nights at Highland Park’s Lodge Room. The October 18 show is sold out; tickets are still available for Wednesday, October 16 and Thursday, October 17. Soriah, the Portland-based musician and throat singer, opens all three nights.

For her “Match My Freak” shows, Tinashe teamed up with SoundCloud to find opening DJs in every city of the North American leg of the tour. LA’s winner will have the chance to spin at The Greek Theatre on Thursday, October 17, when the R&B star, whose latest album, Quantum Baby, was released in August, and opener Raveena perform at the iconic outdoor venue.

Stars - The Fonda (Oct. 18)



Back in 2004, Canadian band Stars released Set Yourself on Fire. It was the indie pop outfit’s third album and proved to be their breakthrough, earning Stars critical praise, a Juno award nomination and mainstream recognition when single “Your Ex-Lover Is Dead” turned up in both TV shows and films. Stars current tour is a celebration of the album’s 20th anniversary. Catch them at The Fonda on Friday, October 18 with Kevin Drew, known for co-founding Broken Social Scene, opening the show. In early September, The Airborne Toxic Event released Glory, their first album since frontman’s Mikel Jollett’s New York Times best-selling memoir Hollywood Park, and the band’s companion album of the same name. They’ve been on the road since Glory’s release, but The Airborne Toxic Event is heading back for two hometown shows, beginning with a night at The Ford on Friday, October 18. The band then play The Wiltern on October 19.

Rock ’n’ roll party Cretin Hop heads to The Virgil on Friday, October 18 with live performances from Suburban John, featuring members of seminal LA punk outfits Suburban Lawns and the Minutemen playing a set that includes Suburban Lawns songs and Position Nuit. It’s a soulful night at The Paramount on Friday, October 18, when The Jack Moves and Rudy De Anda, both of whom are currently on tour, lead the lineup at the Boyle Heights venue. From New York and New Jersey, The Jack Moves channels 1980s and ‘90s R&B with a hint of disco, where De Anda, who is from LA, but now lives in Chicago, merges the funky sound of the early ‘70s with contemporary indie pop. Also playing are Junior Scaife, whose 2023 single, “When the Heart Beats” is a throwback to the classics of the 1960s that shows off his smooth voice, and similarly soul-influenced locals Loser Lemon and Cold Cut. Back in 1994, Sunny Day Real Estate helped popularize the decade’s emo wave when debut album, Diary became a college radio staple. Thirty years later, the band is taking the seminal album on the road for an anniversary run. J. Robbins, the musician best known for fronting Jawbox, opens the night. Portuguese fado singer Mariza is world-renowned not only for her voice, but for collaborations with musicians across genres. Recently, she was featured on dancehall duo Supa Squad’s single ”Minha Terra” and recorded the duet “Desamor” with Gson of the Portuguese hip-hop group Wet Bed Gang. On Saturday, October 19, Mariza will perform as part of KCRW’s series at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Particle Kid is the eclectic, experimental alter ego of Micah Nelson, the guitarist who has worked with Neil Young, as well as with his dad, Willie. Two years ago, he released the double album, Time Capsule, a wild ride with contributions from artists like Sean Ono Lennon, Dinosaur Jr’s J Mascis and British punk duo The Lovely Eggs. Nelson starts his tour as Particle Kid in mid-October and will play Gold-Diggers on Sunday, October 19 with long-running psyche band Stevenson Ranch Davidians. Tickets at Dice.

Southern California’s ties to country and roots music are strong and will be on display at Zebulon on Sunday, October 19, for the Western 80s Edge tribute to the music of folks like Dwight Yoakam, Los Lobos, X and The Blasters.
