Legendary actress, writer and comedian Lily Tomlin will take the stage at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center for An Evening With Lily Tomlin on Friday, March 11.

Tomlin currently stars as Frankie Bergstein on the Netflix series Grace and Frankie. Her performance as Frankie garnered her nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2015 and a 2016 Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy.

Tomlin began her career as a stand-up comedian and performed Off-Broadway during the 1960s. She rose to fame on Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In, joining the cast in the middle of the third season. Among the classic characters she created for the variety show were Ernestine the telephone operator, the precocious Edith Ann, Mrs. Judith Beasley and The Tasteful Lady. Tomlin’s 1972 comedy album, This Is a Recording, features Ernestine's encounters with customers over the phone and won the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Recording.

With the premiere of Appearing Nitely at the Biltmore Theatre in April 1977, Tomlin became the first woman to appear solo in a Broadway show. Tomlin’s signature role was written by her wife, Jane Wagner in a one-woman show titled The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe. The show opened on Broadway in 1985 and won Tomlin the Tony Award for Best Lead Actress in a Play.

Director Robert Altman cast Tomlin in her first movie role, as Linnea Reese in his 1974 film, Nashville. Her performance garnered critical acclaim and won her several awards as well as nominations for the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Her performance as Margo Sperling in The Late Show (1977) also earned praise from the critics and nominations for the Golden Globe and BAFTA Award for Best Lead Actress. Other notable films include 9 to 5 (1980), All of Me (1984), Flirting with Disaster (1996), Tea with Mussolini (1999), I Heart Huckabees (2004), and Grandma (2015), for which she received a 2016 Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.

Tomlin has received numerous awards during her career, including four Primetime Emmys, two Tony Awards, a CableACE Award as Executive Producer for the film adaptation of The Search, a Grammy Award, and two Peabody Awards - the first for the ABC television special, Edith Ann’s Christmas: Just Say Noël and the second as narrator and Executive Producer for the HBO film, The Celluloid Closet. In 2003 Tomlin was awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. In December 2014 she was one of five honorees for the annual Kennedy Center Honors, given to those in the performing arts for their lifetime of contributions to American culture.
