Collecting Art in LA (Course through CalArts Extension)


This course is your guide to the exciting contemporary art scene in Los Angeles. You will explore many aspects of contemporary art leading to a deeper understanding of current movements and how to embark on building a collection. Find the art that speaks to you and understand its place within the wide range of the art that is being produced today. Through lectures, discussions, and field trips, students should gain an in-depth understanding of contemporary art and the ability to navigate the LA art scene with confidence. Possible class visits may include commercial galleries, private collections, artist's studios, and non-profit art spaces. This class meets Saturdays 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. January 25 to March 1, 2025 at THE REEF, 1933 South Broadway, Suite 1216, CalArts' new space in downtown Los Angeles.

The course begins with an overview of contemporary art to establish a general understanding of key artists, terminology, and trends. Grounded in principles of equity, inclusivity, and decolonization, this course explores topics such as the history of colonial art collections, cultural extraction, and appropriation. Learn where and how to purchase pieces, and how to make informed and ethical choices as a collector.
